A FOGA success story: Gloucester Rugby Heritage

The Project came about when Gloucester Rugby started major building work at their Kingsholm ground in 2007. A brand new grandstand was erected on the south side of the ground, and as the demolition of the old stand got underway, a treasure trove of photographs, papers and other memorabilia dating as far back as the 19th Century came to light. This was all far too interesting to throw away, so an emergency rescue resulted in 31 large boxes of material being handed over to Gloucestershire Archives to form the basis of a Gloucester Rugby Archive.

The Friends were a key partner in the Project, alongside Gloucestershire Archives and Gloucester Rugby . In 2008 we submitted a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, securing nearly £50k over three years, which brought the Project’s initial funding to £88k. The Friends provided the project manager, the treasurer and the webmaster. Although the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund has now ended, the Project continues to thrive, with sponsorship from a local firm and income from the sale of its own publications.

The Project has gone from strength to strength: volunteers have catalogued the material, recorded and publicised stories and memories about the club - its history, achievements and famous figures, developed learning materials for both primary and secondary levels, created and published books showcasing Gloucester's Rugby Heritage, made a lot of material available on-line, mounted displays all around the Kingsholm ground, and much, much more.
